Net analysis company OneStat says that Google was used by 46% of surfers last month. That's more than twice 2nd place Yahoo that had 20%.
If you want to get targeted, free traffic to your site, it's more important than ever to be in Google. If you're interested in how to have your site rank better in Google, you can check out these tips:

Seems like you have good knowledge and experience with se's.. Any idea which (good) places that would allow cigarette/tobacco store ads? Google and Bill Gates does not... :) I have several clients running tobacco stores, the only one I found so far is discount-cigarettes.com, they are about $300 a month and most my clients thinks it is too much for what it gives them..

It's funny that Google will advertise porn but not tobacco! I wasn't aware of that.
One nice source of low-cost advertising is the TextAd program on Metafilter ( http://www.metafilter.com/textads.mefi ).
You get 10,000 impressions for $10 from a high-traffic site with users who are in the mood to browse around. I placed a silly ad there for my weblog once and got about 2% clickthrough rates, which isn't bad. At just ten bucks it's cheap to give it a try and see how you like it.

Bill will be happy to take your money for msn's sponsored listings, coming from overture. And Bill is probably getting even more money for the new LookSmart deal. I just don't think either is a good deal for most websites.
Google won't do adwords for tobacco but gaining a high ranking in the Google results pages for targeted keywords can be much more cost effective than ANY forms of "traditional" online advertising.
For the most part, I stay away from banner ads. They just don't produce ROI.
Search engine optimization for targeted keywords can be the best approach for most sites.
Are there exceptions to all my statements? Of course. But they're few and far between.
I personally use Overture, Google Adwords Select and some other paid options. But I'm regularly watching and adjusting to get the most for my money. And my single largest referrer stat is still free google search for targeted keywords.
Good luck,

This totally matches my experience. Google has been the #1 referrer to my website, sending more traffic than all other SE's combined

As Far as I know, Yahoo uses Google engine for searching the Web, so Google gets total 66% coverage :)

Good point, kafedjiski. Yahoo does use Google's index for backup results so every Yahoo searcher has potential for getting to Google results.
But Yahoo present alot of other results before showing Google. Yahoo presents Overture paid listings first, then Yahoo category matches, then matching websites from the Yahoo directory and only then does it use Google search results. So for most searches, the surfer won't get to Google results until at least the second page of results. The majority of searchers don't go past the first page of results.
So Google does get some extra exposure on Yahoo, but nowhere near the full 20% of Yahoo traffic.
Good luck,

That's why I use Google :)

bringing this up again... Metafilter did not accept cigarette ads, we've been trying around on severals now and it proves very hard to find...
hmmail.com is targeted but costs $300 per claimed no-spam email receiver.... I happened to find
http://www.instantbulkemail.com/index.htm and finds that hard to believe they allow 2.5million emails sent per day for $50 one time fee (if they have 1000 customers sending 2Mill emails each I believe the hardware would cost quite a bit).. Anyone had any experience with'em and know if they are for real?
Any other suggestions? :)
